As per a lottery process organized by the Andheri RTO, over 450 women drivers have won permits for the pink autorickshaw service, slated to start by the end of February.
The autorickshaws can only carry women and their families, but there is no rule against carrying male passengers also, according to Mumbai Metropolitan Region Transport Authority.
For easier identification, the autos will be coloured either pink or saffron, instead of the usual black and yellow.
While some of the rules have been relaxed for women applicants, but fluency in Marathi and domicile of 15 years as proof of residency is still mandatory for both genders.
This news has largely met with great enthusiasm and positive anticipation.
